Africa Photo Safari – Amboseli

A Kenyan Safari wouldn’t be right without a trip to Amboseli.

Amboseli National Park provides one of the most fantastic and amazing vistas of Kenya, with Mount Kilimanjaro (in Tanzania) as the back drop. At 18,652 feet above sea level, Kilimanjaro rules the plains like a powerful god ruling the world from his lofty throne. In fact, old Swahili and Arab legends tell of a great inland mountain with a evil god living at the top. As consequence for anyone daring to approach his throne, he would paralyze their feet and hands. Fascinating how inhabitants of tropical regions described being frostbite. Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania but the most spectacular view is from the National Park at Amboselli.

Amboseli gets plenty of water year round, but it’s just hiding below the surface. The snow on Mount Kilimanjaro melts, soaking into the permeable subsoil layers of volcanic rocks. These underground streams percolate to the surface forming two clear springs in the center of the park. Water also oozes up at many other spots in the park creating large marshes like the Loginya Swamp. These marshes and swamps have become private watering holes for hippos, buffaloes, and elephants.

Many photo safaris to Africa will take you to Amboseli. So when you’re choosing a safari company, you should also think about other features of the safari, such as number of photographers per jeep, lodging and accommodations, and cost.
